In commemoration of the International Day of the Girl Child, the Mariam Adeola Gbadebo (MAG) Foundation hosted a successful Sensitisation and mentoring exercise with over 200 girls from JSS Apo Legislative in attendance. The theme for the event was “Girls Vision for the Future,” aligned with our vision of empowering adolescent girls through education, health awareness, and gender equality.
The engagement featured insightful sessions led by notable speakers. Ms. Victoria Ighafidon, representing the Adolescent Department of the FCT Women Affairs Secretariat, took the students through the significance of Adolescent Health Week. She provided valuable information on gender sensitization, gender-based rights, and the critical importance of understanding and advocating for one’s rights. Ms. Ighafidon’s session was interactive and well-received, leaving the students with a deeper understanding of their roles in society and the importance of health in their development.
Additionally, Dr. Anthony Urasi, a renowned public health specialist,
National Coordinator, Global Standard Healthcare Development Limited.
Member, FCT-Coalition For Health and Empowerment captivated the students with a talk on adolescent health, focusing on mental health awareness. His discussion covered crucial topics such as depression, anxiety, and strategies for managing mental health challenges, especially in honor of World Mental Health Day. Dr. Urasi equipped the girls with practical tips on how to safeguard their mental well-being amid trials and challenges, providing them with essential life skills for navigating the complexities of adolescence.
The event also featured a series of goodwill messages, including a heartwarming address by the school principal, Mrs. Alabi, who expressed gratitude for the foundation’s ongoing commitment to the students’ empowerment and development. The presence of our dedicated staff, volunteers, and other key participants ensured a seamless and impactful engagement.
Overall, the event was a resounding success. The students left the gathering empowered and sensitized, armed with knowledge about their health, rights, and the importance of self-care. As we continue to celebrate the strength and resilience of girls, the MAG Foundation remains committed to fostering an environment where girls can envision and work toward a brighter future.
This report will be shared across our website and social media platforms as we continue to highlight our efforts to uplift adolescent girls in Nigeria.
