Enhancing Water, Sanitation and Hygiene Practices in Secondary Schools to Prevent Cholera and Other Waterborne Diseases – A Path to Good Health
Background
Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) are critical components of public health, particularly in educational institutions. Poor WASH practices in schools can lead to the spread of waterborne diseases such as cholera, typhoid, and dysentery, which significantly impact students’ health and academic performance. In Nigeria, the prevalence of these diseases is exacerbated by inadequate sanitation facilities, lack of clean water, and insufficient hygiene education.
Objectives
- To educate students and teachers on the importance of proper WASH practices.
- To provide practical demonstrations on handwashing, use of toilets, and safe water practices.
- To distribute educational materials and resources on WASH.
- To engage the wider community in discussions about the importance of maintaining good hygiene practices.
 Expected Outcomes
- Increased Awareness: Students, teachers, and community members will better understand the importance of WASH practices.
- Behavioral Change: Adopting improved hygiene practices among students and the wider community.
- Health Improvement: Reduction in the incidence of waterborne diseases in the school and community.
- Sustainable Impact: Long-term improvement in health and hygiene standards within the school and community.
